UNC Old Well

Chapel Hill, NC

A rich perennial garden inspired by regions of North Carolina

Wolf Josey’s new design for the Old Well honors the history and importance of the Old Well to UNC with a contemporary, rich perennial garden. The design visually connects the Old Well to McCorkle Quad beyond, and envisions splashes of flowering blue drifts through the garden.

The planting is designed to represent the vast diversity of native regional plants across North Carolina, from the Coastal Plain, Piedmont and Blue Ridge provinces. Ensuring certain traits for durability, color and height, cultivars of species were chosen to enable year round interest and consistency throughout the planting beds with an emphasis on Spring and Fall highlights. Wolf Josey developed a comprehensive management guide to help the university steward the garden overtime and respond to changing environment conditions, such as shade from the adjacent oak tree.
