SENTARA MARTHA JEFFERSON HOSPITAL MASTER PLAN
Albemarle County, VA
A hospital’s grounds are revised with much needed outdoor spaces for staff
After working with Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital to transform a rooftop into the Serenity Garden, Wolf Josey was asked to develop a Master Plan to help the hospital guide its landscape management and development. Martha Jefferson Hospital hoped to improve upon the healing benefits their extensive campus offers patients, and on the healthful recreation opportunities it offers the community.
The plan identifies opportunities and develops concepts for five additional garden spaces around campus to serve as restorative spaces for staff and visitors. A thorough inventory of Martha Jefferson’s extensive landscape and current maintenance practices translated into strategies for improving tree canopy overtime, increasing native meadow coverage, and reducing maintenance needs. The plan identified opportunities to improve site circulation and connectively to adjacent trails, as well as to improve campus cohesion through a uniform palette of site furnishings.
