UVA CENTRAL GROUNDS ACCESS

Charlottesville, VA

A winding ramp circumnavigates an inaccessible stair

The UVA Central Grounds project revises a key circulation corridor to supplement and replace existing stairs with accessible ramps. Together Phase 1 and Phase 2 provide ramped pathways that connect the Bookstore and Student Center to the Academical Village and main libraries. Phase 1, completed in 2025, adds a winding ramp adjacent to an existing stair. The ramp was located to preserve existing canopy trees, and thus brings visitors through a shady grove supplemented with plantings of flower understory trees, shrubs, and drifts of groundcover. The ramp and surrounding site walls take their material cues from adjacent paving and stonework, so seamlessly blend with historic conditions. The design of Phase 2 is currently in progress.
