WATERFRONT PARK

Washington, DC

Working closely with local residents and stakeholder groups, the park was designed for the nearby extant communities of Southwest D.C. as a neighborhood park for gathering, playing and enjoying views of the Washington Channel and nearby Potomac River. Bocce courts and play mounds around a central lawn welcomes visitors to enjoy an afternoon or evening with friends while the pergola frames water views and provides ample seating in the shade for everyday users.

The green-gray carderock stone throughout the park is locally quarried north of the city and the arc fountain, as it steps, references the District’s location along the Piedmont/Coastal geological fault line as the density of the stepping stones transition from the fountain source to the lowest basin. Mature willow oaks and their root zones that surrounded the former open parking lot were preserved and remain standing tall years after construction. Seasonal perennial gardens provide rich habitat for insects and birds while also treating the park’s stormwater in various bioretention gardens throughout the park. As the project manager while at NBW, Paul Josey led the overall landscape design and detailing of the park through design development.
