Originally designed in 1976 by Dan Kiley, the initial form was designed in contrast to the strong formal and axial relationships on the national mall. Due to aging infrastructure and low visitor numbers, in 2011/12, a national design competition was sponsored by the Trust for the National Mall to re envision the historic design. Mary Wolf led the NBW/PMA design team and the entry, celebrating local ecologies and discovery, was selected as a finalist in the competition.
